An officer on patrol from the Scarsdale Police Department on Weaver Street was alerted by his vehicle’s License Plate Reader stating that a 2017 Chevrolet had been suspended or revoked due to “for-hire insurance canceled.”
According to police, the officer later saw the vehicle pull into the Balducci’s parking lot and the driver turned the headlights off in an attempt to hide himself, police said. When the officer entered the parking lot, the driver - later identified as Brooklyn resident Adil Akram - took off at a high rate of speed, said police.
The officer then activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop Akram’s Chevrolet.
Police said that Akram lost control of his vehicle, struck an ornamental tree and entered the front lawn of an Innes Road residence. His vehicle suffered heavy front-end damage and two flat tires.
The property on Innes Road also sustained substantial damage to its ornamental trees, Belgian blocks, driveway and front lawn. The homeowner has estimated the damage to be upwards of $2,500.
The investigation into Akram found that his privilege to operate a vehicle in New York had been suspended 12 times on six separate dates. A fraudulent New York State Inspection Sticker was also in the windshield. The vehicle was towed and Akram was arrested.
Akram was charged with:
- Possession of a forged instrument, a felony;
- Unlawful fleeing a police officer, a misdemeanor;
- Criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor;
- Reckless driving, a misdemeanor;
- Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor;
- Operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, a misdemeanor;
- Criminal mischief for reckless property damage more than $250, a misdemeanor.
Akram was also cited for passing a red light, speeding and driving motor vehicle whose “lights don’t meet standards.”
Following his arraignment in Scarsdale Village Court, Akron was remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond. No return court date has been announced.
